This thursday saw the sun provide us with the biggest solar flare for decades. Such an event can threaten GPS navigation systems, power and inadvertently divert airlines. It is more than likely going to affect those near the polar regions.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) “The magnetic field orientation needed to cause strong geomagnetic storming finally occurred overnight, so although it got off to a slow start, levels have reached what was predicted,”.

One such geo magnetic power storm caused by solar flares knocked out a power grid in Montréal in 1989. Solar flares like this can occur when the sun begins to ‘wake up’ from a dormant phase. Nothing was reported from last thursday.
