How to connect with Wi-Fi on Linux openSUSE

There must be times when you tried Wi-Fi on Linux openSUSE, but unfortunately, it doesn't worked. Well this can be solved pretty easily.

The root of the cause is generally located into the chipset used in wireless card. There are some steps involved for finding out the solution:

1) Find your card

You can run Yast, and in the networking section, identify your card. If it's not displayed then run lspci or lsusb (as per your card type) in a terminal.

2) Find out the driver

Try to find out the driver of you wireless card. For USB devices, you can check for drivers in Google and find a useful one. Now, after knowing the driver it's time to find out that whether it is installed or not. Some are the part of the kernel for others you need to install them separately. You can run this command

/sbin/modprobe –l

This will give a list of all in- kernel drivers. If still not found the driver, then using Yast’s Software Management section's search box find out a suitable package. But if still not found then move to driver's homepage and follow the installing instruction. Sometimes it happens that driver is there but it's not recognizing the card. So you need a firmware file. These are generally extracted from the Windows drivers.

3) Create the directory and install driver

Default location of firmware files for SUSE is /lib/firmware/zd1211 (other may /lib/firmware). Now create this directory and unpack the firmware archive make a copy of all the files in /lib/firmware/zd1211. Now it's Time to find out whether the card is recognized or not. It should appear now in the list –

-now select it and click the Edit button.

-Select Automatic Address Setup on the Address tab and set Device Activation on the General tab to either On Hotplug if it is a plugin USB device or has a switch otherwise manually control the device from the Network Manager icon in the taskbar.

-Press next and Finish exiting the configuration.

4) Select your network

Select your network from the Network Manager applet in the taskbar. For secured network with WEP or WPA encryption, enter your passphrase.

Turn off encryption on your access point while setting up the connection, so to avoid complexity and first let’s get the connection working. If it's working then, disconnect, turn the encryption back on and reconnect. Now enter your WEP or WPA passphrase and now you are securely Wi-Fi connected.

Hope it will work for u and it worked for me.

Wise Words

"When we finally presented it at the shareholders' meeting, everyone in the auditorium stood up and gave it a five-minute ovation. What was incredible to me was that I could see the Mac team in the first few rows. It was as though none of us could believe that we'd actually finished it. Everyone started crying."

My worry about losing the Queen

My worry about losing the Queen would be that she would still be entitled to take money from the Crown Estates. I hope when negotiations are taking place after the referendum, that the SNP would not go soft on this and on a number of other matters, like being over generous with the entitlement...
